Capturing Lalibela for an exhibition

Animal pensant traveled to Ethiopia to produce a documentary video series as part of the CNRS and Archéovision exhibition, "Lalibela, Sculpting Faith".
Our mission: to capture the essence of the millennia-old monolithic churches and the life that surrounds them.

The brief

  • To design immersive videos that reveal the history of Lalibela—its culture and architecture—and that tell stories of lives and archaeological research projects.
  • To combine aesthetics and pedagogy through spectacular imagery capturing the beauty of the site, alongside accessible scientific explanations of its evolution and conservation.

Our solutions

  • A custom-built management interface to streamline shoot organization, document sharing, and production tracking.
  • A visual, sonic, and emotional immersion through full-length video portraits of Lalibela’s inhabitants, displayed at life size in the exhibition; ambient sound recordings; and the integration of Ethiopian-language graphic elements.
  • An advanced technical setup featuring 4K footage, drone shots, 3D content, video graphics, and sound design, enabling a fully immersive experience.
  • Close collaboration with Archéovision to integrate 3D content and scientific visualizations into the videos, and to ensure coherence across the exhibition’s various media (videos, interactive installations, augmented or virtual reality devices).
  • A rigorous yet accessible narrative, grounded in research and based on scripts validated by historians and archaeologists specializing in the site.
  • Partnerships with local fixers to build trust with residents, understand the cultural and religious issues of the site, and thus present authentic stories.
